Patient Testimony

My name is “JJ” and I am a recovering alcoholic. I’m going on 30+ days being sober but before that, I was 2 ½ years sober but let me start from the beginning. I took my first drink around 7 or 8 years old, I had a crazy child hood. Being the only boy of 5 kids, my mom was there but not there. My grandma was the one who raised me. I grew up around a lot of females, so in my teens I started drinking a little more. For me when it became bad was October 2022 when I found out my brother passed away, and that right there sent me into a spiral. I couldn’t stop. I was in high school with liquor in my locker so every time I had a break, me and some of my friends would grab a cup. This all led to drinking daily throughout my entire adult life.

I had children, had a lot of jobs working as a kitchen chef and I never drank when I got to work. Then covid hit and I started drinking heavily every day. I was dealing with grief and just drama from my children’s mother. So, in late 2020 my family & I decided it was time for me to get some help, so I enrolled into a state funded facility.

The program was only 14 days and I came out feeling better but I knew I had to take it one day at a time in my recovery.

In August 2024 I relapsed after having 2 ½ years sober. I lost my mother. That just made me feel numb and I started drinking at 5 am and would drink when I felt like it. I was covering up the grief with the alcohol. I started lashing out and distancing myself from why wife, kids and family. I had a lot of stuff going through my head, so for a while I would continue to drink not caring about how others felt or how they were affected by my drinking.

I knew I was hurting everyone that meant the world to me and I prayed to my mom to give me strength and she did too. This helped my decision to go back to rehab and on September 21, 2024 I entered Wellness and Recovery Rehab and I surrendered to a full treatment stay.

On my intake day , I had bad anxiety, the bubble guts, hypertension and depressed that I was leaving my family. Staff quickly assured me that I could take a couple of days to detox and didn’t have to attend groups unless I felt ready and comfortable. That immediately started to ease my anxiety.

I ended up walking into the group room my first day, and I was so mind boggled that I joined and staff immediately welcomed me with open arms and no judgment. This made me feel good and felt that I made the right decision with this facility. Staff would allow me to reach out to my wife and kids which helped a lot and helped ease my anxiety. The staff put all my worries at ease so I decided this was the place for me and I was going to stick it out.

I’ve learned coping skills (which I never learned those at the last rehab), I have learned a lot about myself and how to deal with my anger and accept that people have their own opinions and actions. I now know I have to put myself first no matter what and rely on my wife, kids, and family for support.

Lastly, I am grateful that on October 21, I will be 35 days clean and so thankful to everyone at Wellness and Recovery Rehab that has been a part of my treatment journey! You all have saved my life!

A special thank you to my Therapist Tammy for helping me and never giving up on me. She has taught me so many skills and has set me up for long term success. Thank you again Wellness and Recovery Rehab for saving my life!
